Our dear departed ones know our thoughts and feelings

 "Our deceased family and friends are not gone, neither are they far, far away in some distant heaven. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, “They are not far from us, and know and understand our thoughts, feelings, and motions, and are often pained therewith.” [11] Brigham Young taught that the spirit world is right here on this earth, [12] and Parley P. Pratt gave an extensive explanation for how and why that is the case[13] Joseph F. Smith said: “I believe we move and have our being in the presence of heavenly messengers and of heavenly beings. We are not separate from them. . . . We are closely related to our kindred, to our ancestors, to our friends and associates and co-laborers who have preceded us into the spirit world.” [14] "

How to invite and recognize the Spirit

When seeking the Spirit and personal revelation, it’s important to do so within the correct framework. Quoting Preach My Gospel, Elder [Gary E.] Stevenson said: “‘Having the guidance of the Holy Ghost in your life requires spiritual work. This work includes fervent prayer and consistent scripture study. It also includes keeping your covenants and God’s commandments. … It includes worthily partaking of the sacrament each week’ [Preach My Gospel, 101].”

He then provided four additional guiding principles for “inviting and recognizing the promptings of the Spirit”:

  1. 1. Stand in Holy Places: “Our temples and homes are the most sacred of these dedicated spaces.”
  2. 2. Stand with Holy People: “If you hope to feel the Spirit, be with people with whom the Spirit can easily dwell.”

  3. 3. Testify of Holy Truths: “The Comforter always shares his voice when we testify with our voice.”

  4. 4. Listen to the Holy Spirit: “He speaks in subtle, quiet tones. … Find a quiet place, a holy space where you can seek to receive direction from the Spirit.”

For example, we can share that “an endowment is literally a ‘gift.’” The temple endowment is a gift of sacred blessings from God to each of us, and some of those blessings include:

  • “Law of Obedience, which includes striving to keep God’s commandments.
  • “Law of Sacrifice, which means doing all we can to support the Lord’s work and repenting with a broken heart and contrite spirit.
  • “Law of the Gospel, which is the higher law that He taught while He was on the earth.
  • “Law of Chastity, which means that we have sexual relations only with the person to whom we are legally and lawfully wedded according to God’s law.
  • “Law of Consecration, which means dedicating our time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed us to building up Jesus Christ’s Church on the earth.”

We should not make it too expensive emotionally for others to try to communicate with us

"We ought to build a climate around us in which we are, in all situations, open to the comments of others. We should not make it too expensive emotionally for others to try to communicate with us. If it is too hard to do so, people will just pull back. If we are too well protected and too well defended, they are not going to extend themselves overmuch in an effort to communicate with us. It is difficult to say which is most dangerous—the mote in one's eye or the moat around his "castle" that keeps out the needed communications, involving correction, counsel, or commendation."

Receiving a testimony line upon line

The Savior holds our children blameless for our parental mistakes
